This is one of those AP references most people don’t even know exists, which is honestly half the fun of it.

The Huitième was AP’s dressy chronograph through the 80s and into the 90s, totally overshadowed at the time by the Royal Oak and the Offshore that followed - but there’s so much to like about this watch when you actually sit with it.

40mm 18k rose gold case, with the Audemars Piguet signature engraved straight into the bezel which is one of those design quirks AP just doesn’t do anymore and gives the watch loads of character. Pump pushers, knurled crown, downturned lugs that hug the wrist nicely. The dial is the real winner though - clean white background, rose gold applied indices, three sub-registers across 6, 9 and 12, and a magnified date aperture at 3 framed in gold. Blued chrono hands tie it all together and add the perfect pop without throwing off the dressier feel.

Movement-wise it’s the AP Cal. 2126 - 51 jewels, 21k gold rotor, automatic - and the same calibre family AP ended up using in the very first Royal Oak Offshore a few years later. So there’s some proper horological story here too.

You’d struggle to find a more interesting solid rose gold AP chronograph at this money.
