Usually when I buy something new, I like to do a bit of research.
This one sent me down the rabbit hole for hours!
The original Ingenieur launched in 1976. The same year as the Nautilus.
Both designed by Gerald Genta.
Yet one became one of the most desirable watches on the planet, while the other…. Didn’t.
The more I read, the more it started to make sense.
The original Ingenieur was big. Thick. Very industrial. Almost entirely satin finished. The bracelet lacked the refinement of the Nautilus and Royal Oak, and despite being a genuinely impressive watch, it never took off.
Now IWC have released this.
Based back on the original 1976 version, but fixing all the things that missed the mark while modernising slightly into today’s world.
Which leads to a question I’ve been thinking about ever since.
If this was the watch IWC launched in 1976, would we be talking about Ingenieurs the same way we talk about Royal Oaks and Nautiluses today?
I guess we’ll never know.
